ASHA Day, the annual fundraiser to help the 400,000 slum dwellers of New Dehli, India, takes place Saturday at Hall Winery in St. Helena.
This year the group is marking its 25th anniversary since Dr. Kieran Martin, a young pediatrician, decided to do something to improve the lives of people living in slums in New Dehli.
Since then, she has led the effort to bring health care and clean water and better housing to the slums, to encourage families to keep their children in school, to help people get loans to start businesses and to help promising young people go on to college.
Each year, Dr. Martin travels to Napa for a fundraiser hosted by Rep. Mike Thompson and Jan Thompson, Kathryn Hall and K.C. Chaudhary, the founder of Chaudhary and Associates of Napa.
The fundraiser began after Jan Thompson, a nurse, visited an ASHA project while accompanying her husband on a congressional visit to New Delhi.
At the fundraiser, which includes a silent auction and Indian food, along with Hall wines, Dr. Martin will provide updates on the ongoing ASHA projects.
ASHA Day is 6-8 p.m. on Saturday. For reservations, call Susan at Chaudhary and Associates in Napa at 707-255-2729.
