A Santa Rosa man was arrested for suspected driving under the influence after allegedly getting in an argument with a girlfriend and driving away drunk, according to Napa Police.

Police responded to a report of a fight on the 1400 block of Sherwood Circle on Friday night, but the suspect fled before they arrived, said Sgt. Nick Dalessi.

The suspect, Nicholas J. Meerholz, 33, had been drinking at various bars downtown before heading over to the woman’s house, Dalessi said. When he got there, he and the woman got into an argument and Meerholz pushed her upper chest and face, cutting her lip, Dalessi said.

Meerholz drove away from the scene, but was located during a traffic stop on Old Sonoma Road. Dalessi said that Meerholz displayed signs of intoxication, refused to provide any statements regarding the alleged assault and refused to perform field sobriety tests.

He was arrested and booked at Napa County jail on suspicion of domestic violence and driving under the influence.
