Marvin P. Schafer, 79, passed away at Queen of the Valley Hospital on Sunday, Aug. 20, 2006. A native of Washburn, N.D., Marvin was born on April 1, 1927. He moved to Vallejo with his family when he was 14. At the age of 17, he joined the Merchant Marine and served in World War II on the convoys that crossed the North Atlantic Ocean. Following the war, he returned to Vallejo and went into the service station business. He married Dorothy Bourne in Vallejo on June 30, 1946. He enlisted in the Air Force during the Korean War and when his enlistment was up, he again returned to Vallejo and re-entered the service station business with Standard Oil. In 1956, he moved to Napa and ran the Standard Station at the corner of Trancas and Jefferson streets for the next 23 years. For 10 years after that, he operated the Exxon Station at Silverado Trail, near Lincoln Ave. He loved to be in the out of doors. His favorite pastimes were hunting, fishing, camping, traveling in his RV, and gardening. In his later years, he liked to play cards and bingo. As an RV owner, he was a member of the "Good Sam Club." He will be truly missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his daughter, Paula Dunn and son-in-law, Darryl of Napa; son, Neil Schafer and daughter-in-law, D'Nyse of Napa; daughter-in-law, Marilyn Schafer of Napa; brother, Alfred Schafer of Salem, Ore.; grandchildren, Don, Ken, Jason and his wife Tanya, Jared, Joel, Keith, Nikki, Brandyn, Justin and Desirae and great-granddaughter Sydney Elise.

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, Ewald and Salome Schafer; his wife, Dorothy Schafer; a son, Wayne Schafer and a brother, Arthur Schafer.

Friends are invited to attend memorial services at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24 at the chapel of Richard Pierce Funeral Service, 1660 Silverado Trail, Napa. Private inurnment will be at Tulocay Cemetery.
