NAPA - Edwin Kenneth (Ken) Frost, 86, died Oct. 31, 2008, at a local rest home. He was born on Aug. 18, 1922, in Napa, to Wilbur and Miriam (Vanone) Frost.
Ken was born and raised in Napa. He graduated from Napa High School and Napa Valley Junior College. He went to work at Mare Island Naval Shipyard in June of 1941 as a sheet metal apprentice/journeyman before proudly serving our country in World War II. Ken served in the U.S. Navy from August 1942 until December 1945 in the South Pacific, aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS Cabot and other ships. He was stationed in Hawaii and attained the rank of Petty Officer 2nd Class before being discharged, and then returned to MINS until 1954.
Ken entered into service with the California Highway Patrol in 1954 graduating from the CHP Academy in Sacramento, a career that lasted 27 years, and attained the rank of sergeant before retiring in Napa.
He and his wife, Mabel, loved to travel and camp, starting with a teardrop trailer to a cab-over camper to their beloved Cortez motor home. They visited nearly all the states in the union plus trips to Mexico, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. They took two trips to England and Europe touring in mini motor homes. One adventure took them to the ancestral home of Ken's grandfather's town of Vanone, Italy.
Kenny was exceptionally good with his hands, including carpentry and anything sheet metal. He built an inboard speedboat in his garage from plans and named her "Miss Vicki" after Mabel's middle name, Victoria. Many pleasant outings to Lake Berryessa, Lake Almanor and Lake Shasta were made with family and friends.
He was predeceased by his loving wife of 57 years, Mabel V. Frost; his parents, Wilbur and Miriam (Vanone) Frost; his brothers, Daniel, Bertram and Melvin Frost; and his sister, Jean (Frost) Paoli.
He is survived by his sister, Violet (Frost) Painter, of Eureka; brother Wesley Frost, of Napa; step-children Carl Robert Schillings, of Kingman, Ariz.; Thomas Schillings, of Casa Grande, Ariz.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
With appreciation to Piners for their professionalism and caring during Ken's final days and a special thanks to Emily, Queenie, Tina, Tina Marie and June.
