NAPA - Dec. 5, 1938 - May 16, 2008.
Beloved husband, father and friend Leal Asher Grupp died Friday in the company of his wife Cynthia and close friend Ron Young. He is survived by his brother, his wife, his daughter and son, and two grandchildren. He was a man of immense compassion, integrity and principle. Nearly 70 years of such an extraordinary person is impossible to translate to paper.
In the briefest of descriptions, he graduated with honors from Hastings Law School and practiced law in San Francisco until he moved to the Napa Valley in 1973. He possessed unparalleled genius in criminal law and wildlife advocacy.
He was a past training officer, EMT and chief of Napa County Fire Department, Station No. 13, Soda Canyon. He possessed an astounding knowledge of science, physics and math, and an insatiable curiosity and knowledge of gastronomy.
He will be missed by all of us. He will live on through those of us who have been fortunate enough to share in his life.
Here, where the world is quiet/Here, where all trouble seems/Dead winds’ and spent waves’ riot/In doubtful dreams of dreams/I watch the green field growing/For reaping folk and sowing/For harvest-time and mowing/A sleepy world of streams.
I am tired of tears and laughter/And men that laugh and weep/Of what may come hereafter/For men that sow to reap/I am weary of days and hours/Blown buds of barren flowers/Desires and dreams and powers/And everything but sleep.
From too much love of living/From hope and fear set free/We thank with brief thanksgiving/Whatever gods may be/That no life lives forever/That dead men rise up never/That even the weariest river/Winds somewhere safe to sea.
May peace be with you dear father, husband, brother and friend.
A private memorial will be held at the family’s home. Please contact the Grupp family directly for more information. In lieu of flowers, Leal would ask that you make a donation to UNICEF.
