A theft at the Safeway store in American Canyon was thwarted after store employees noticed two men sneaking around in a storage area on Wednesday night, according to American Canyon Police.

After the men were seen at about 7:50 p.m., they fled the storage area on foot and jumped a masonry block fence, leading into a neighborhood, police said. When officers arrived, a foot pursuit through backyards began.

Police first apprehended and arrested Joseph Albert Peres, 22, of Oakland, who complied with police commands. The other man, later identified as Rayshon Deante Davis, 21, of Concord continued to be chased by police and K9 Chase. When threatened with the dog's release, Davis gave up, police said.

More than $1,300 in liquor items had been taken from the storage room and stashed in nearby bushes prior to the chase, police said. A prying tool had been used to break into the storage room.

Peres and Davis were both booked at the Napa County jail on suspicion of felony shoplifting and misdemeanor possession of burglary tools.
