The northbound on-ramp on Highway 29 at First Street was closed for nearly a half hour Thursday night because of a van fire that consumed the engine compartment and encroached into the passenger compartment.

Napa Fire Department responded to the fire shortly after 8 p.m.

The driver said the engine to his 25-year-old Oldsmobile van caught fire as he was about to enter the freeway, firefighters said.

The driver, the van's solo occupant, was able to pull over and exit the vehicle without injury, the fire department said.
