A grass fire broke out Sunday afternoon east of American Canyon and caused the shutdown of an Interstate 80 on-ramp, but was controlled within a half-hour, according to authorities.

The blaze was reported on a hillside near the 2400 block of American Canyon Road at 1:10 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol's online incident log. American Canyon Fire units went to the scene and contained the fire's spread to a quarter-acre, and no damage to structures was reported, Fire Chief Glen Weeks said.

American Canyon Road was closed from the interchange with Interstate 80 west to Via Firenze, according to police Sgt. Jeff Matlock. The road reopened shortly before 2 p.m.
