It doesn’t have to be this way. There are measures that we can take that would help keep guns out of the hands of people who are angry, depressed, desperate, deranged or just plain stupid or impulsive.

Allison Haley says she knew the job she was about to take in 2017 would be hard, but she didn’t realize how hard. From what we’ve seen so far, however, we think she’s up to it.

Too many governments seem to be slow to evolve online, continuing to use their websites as simple bulletin boards, or concealing valuable information behind outdated or user-unfriendly interfaces. So it was with pleasure that we encountered Napa County’s new web design at countyofnapa.org.

When the fire storms hit Napa County in October, our non-profit sector was able to spring into action, providing services of all kinds, from direct aid to people burned out of their homes to counseling and unemployment compensation even for people who lost no property but whose lives were up…

Weather forecasters say confidence is growing in the likelihood of another strong storm arriving in soggy, snow-laden California early next week. The outlook for more winter-like weather increased Friday as the state turned windy and cold, with residual rain and mountain snow showers in the aftermath of the most recent storm. The next one is expected to arrive Monday. The San Francisco Bay Area weather office says all the threats of downed trees, power outages and flooding will be in play. California has been battered by storm after storm since late December. States of emergency have been declared in 43 counties. As of Thursday, more than 700 people were being housed in 16 shelters in eight counties.

Federal officials are expected to prohibit king salmon fishing this season along much of the West Coast, which many predict could stretch into 2024 season as the drought and other factors take their toll on the iconic Chinook fish. In early April, the Pacific Fishery Management Council, the regulatory group, will consider three proposals that all call for the closure of the 2023 season for commercial and recreational salmon fishing in California and most of Oregon. Biologists say the Chinook salmon population has declined dramatically after years of drought. Many in the fishing industry say Trump-era rules that allowed more water to be diverted from the Sacramento River Basin to agriculture caused even more harm.

Gwyneth Paltrow is expected to testify Friday about a collision on a beginner run at a Utah ski resort between her and a retired optometrist who's suing her. Paltrow has claimed Terry Sanderson was the culprit in the 2016 collision. Her lawyers questioned his daughter on the third day of trial Thursday about her father’s mentions of Paltrow’s wealth and celebrity. Sanderson is suing Paltrow for at least $300,000 in damages, claiming she recklessly crashed into him while the two were skiing at Deer Valley Resort in Park City. In a counterclaim, Paltrow is seeking $1 and attorney fees.

A three-day strike by workers in the Los Angeles Unified School District has wrapped up. But it wasn't immediately clear Thursday if any progress has been made in negotiations for higher pay for teachers’ aides, bus drivers, custodians and other support staff in the nation’s second-largest school system. Teachers joined the picket lines in solidarity, shutting down instruction for the district’s half-million students during the walkout by members of Local 99 of the Service Employees International Union, which represents about 30,000 of the lowest-paid school workers. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass stepped in as mediator on Wednesday.
