What do we love about Napa? Many things, but the natural beauty and open space are the heart of what makes Napa special. That is why my wife and I immediately joined the Napa Land Trust when we moved here, because of the commitment to preserve this heritage for future generations.
The proposed development called "Napa Oaks II" subdivision pertains to the beautiful and natural hilltop ridge at the southwest edge of Napa city limits, off Old Sonoma Road. This area is currently zoned as a Resource Area, which is applied to sensitive lands.
Currently, this 80-acre site is a buffer between the edge of the city and acres of vineyards. The developer, Davidon Homes, is proposing to change the zoning so they can build on this site 53 homes that range from 3,880 to more than 5,000 square feet.
This proposed development would be done in a pristine area that can be seen from multiple highways and streets in Napa, including Highway 29 and Old Sonoma Road. I have reviewed the draft environmental impact report for this development and believe it significantly understates the negative traffic, earthquake, water and view impact if the city were to change the zoning and let this project proceed.
Development on this site has been proposed at least three times in the past and has been denied each time because of these concerns.
The city is now open for comments on this proposed development. I invite you to share any comments or questions you have with the city. Please join me and other Napa residents in asking our City Council to keep the current zoning and preserve this beautiful piece of our city.
