In 1968 Jerry Lewis starred in a comedy "Don't Raise the Bridge, Lower the River." I've long believed that should be the first step in flood control.
Here we are many years into our perpetual "Flood Control Project" and dredging the river is now being invented as another way to benefit the flood project. Next someone will figure out that all the dead trees and snags that clutter the river north of the Third Street Bridge also cause the river to back up during high rain runoff.
So, dredge the river and clear the snags, then re-evaluate the need to raise the levy. The flood project could be finished within a few years. Certainly sooner than forever.
