I would like to comment on the Aug. 15 issue of the Napa Valley Register article, “Is your name written in the Book of Life?” by Karen Good.
She quotes, “The Bible is the infallible authoritative, inerrant Word of God”, then she proceeds to pick passages that support her beliefs and ignore passages that she would be horrified to accredited with God. She embraces passages, like Leviticus 18:22, “You shall not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination. (grossly sinful)”, but turns a blind eye to passages, such as, “Kill those who cursed his father or his mother. Exo. 21:17 and Lev. 20:9. Also “Kill sons of sinners.” Isa. 14:21; Kill your son if “he is a glutton and a drunkard.” Deut. 21:20-21.
Basically, she is preaching cherry-picked Christian scare subjects like: “A day is coming when we will all stand before God and give an account to Him.”; “God will not ‘wink’ at our sins much longer”; “Jesus Christ is coming back for His true believers.”
So this means Jesus leaves behind God’s selected people, the Jews, as well as millions of good men and women who don’t happen to be Christians?
She also claims in her article, just like most Christians do that, “God is love.” This is not true. The Israelites knew and feared their God. “A God mighty and terrible..." Deut.7:21.
You don’t fear a “loving God.” They knew God; He was their God. The Old Testament’s God was anything but loving. On the contrary, He was often angry with His chosen people. He was jealous and terrifying. He indiscriminately killed innocent children and animals throughout the history of the Old Testament.
See what the Old Testament says about God’s character: “The LORD is a man of war...” Exo.15:3. He is a “man”; "Man of war is not a man of love. “And I will dash them one against another, even the fathers and the sons together, saith the LORD: I will not pity, nor spare, nor have mercy, but destroy them.” Jer.13:14. Just look at all the starving, sick, crippled children on earth. He is not a “Loving Father.” A loving father would never punish thousands of generations for the sin of one man, a man of His own creation.
If Christians ignore God and switch to Jesus, then they should know Jesus:
“Think not that I come to send peace on earth: I come not to send peace, but a sword. For I come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughters against her mother, and the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. And the man’s foes shall be they of his own household.” Matt.10:34-35-36. See also Luke 12:51-52-53.
“And the brother shall deliver up the brother to death and the father the child: and the children shall rise up against their parents, and cause them to be put to death.” Matt.10:21; Mark 13:12 and Luke 21:16.
“If any man come to me, and hate not his father and mother and wife and children, and brethren and sister; yea, and his own life also he cannot be my disciple.” Luke14:26.
These verses show you the other side of Jesus, which are not preached regularly in Sunday sermons.
Karen Good claims that, “It is time for the church to take a stand and speak up for the truth of God’s holy word because our silence speaks acceptance of the evil in the world.” History shows us the atrocities committed by the church in their zeal to force their bigoted morality on the world. Let us remember what happened and not repeat the mistakes of the past.
