County of Napa residents may want to ask their county supervisors some questions about what it means to be Agricultural Watershed zoned land in Napa.

On Wednesday, Nov. 18, the Planning Commission intends to approve hill removal extraction of aggregate from Syar Industries property adjacent to Skyline Park. Much of that land is designated Industrial, but the former Pasini property is A-W zoned land.

Agriculture is important in Napa. In fact, we value the zoned designation of Agricultural-Watershed land so much that we passed Measure J decades ago to protect it and extended the protection for decades through Measure P in 2008 with a 62 percent yes vote.

This, in effect, made voters the protectors of agricultural lands, because zoning re-designation would need to go to a vote.

County documents conflict about whether mining permits can be issued in A-W zoned land, but perhaps the voters' voices need to be heard on the matter. Perhaps the intent of the voters in Measures J and P does not include removing 250 feet of topsoil and rock from A-W land. Please let your voices be heard so this dangerous precedent does not counteract the work we have done to protect agricultural land in Napa County.

Please contact the Board of Supervisors to tell them to remove the Pasini Parcel as a condition of approval for the Syar mine expansion. Protect agricultural land as intended by Measures J and P.
