Note from author: This piece was written prior to the attack on our American congressman last Wednesday and does in no way call for or condone violence. There is only one way to achieve political victory in this beautiful nation of ours and that is at the ballot box. With this said, I present my thoughts.
Somewhere hiding between bicker and spin there is a message. A single breath of truth, a heavy cloud ready to burst. It hangs in the sky over a party scrambling below to find sobriety and reason just as the storm breaks.
For after a defeat as powerful as that felt by the Democrats last fall, one would be bewildered if this truth raining down from above did not become their mantra. For again, this is the very truth that clings to the walls of town halls and slips biting at a country divided in street conversations and social media posts abound. It is the reality; a truth realized and forgotten again and again. It is who we are, as Americans. The ingenious brute. The delectable patriot, the righteous idiot.
The truth is that the campaign that Donald Trump ran grabs deeply into the heart of our culture, if not so much so that perhaps we lied to ourselves in seeing his victory as a rejection of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, and in our guard of continuity and decorum missed the greater meaning. For perhaps, it is not Donald Trump and his campaign that grabbed at us, but us that grabbed at it.
Please for the sake of reason, let us see that fateful vote not as a illogical want but a means to an end. A stomp in the dirt, a fist in the air, a half-slur half-grunt thrashing as one disposes his only truth. Our uncle, our father, our drunken brother, our sober dish-washing mother barking over the TV, our wives.
This is America; we are allowed to be blood-boiling angry, and we are allowed to be protective. How, then, can we look not at those who championed the president in his election as traitors, but as patriots? Creatures of country, beings of want. For it is they who lead him to victory, they like great climbers of a mountain, they like warriors storming the front.
They decided their future and they obtained it.
If Democrats cannot fight with the same unhinged valiance as Trump did in the presidential election, in the 2018 mid-term elections, they will lose. Trump as a leader has welcomed before his country a political arena without rule or boundary. A place where he watches men and women fight against each other like animals as he, the great emperor, dines and claps from his balcony above.
Hope is dead. The era of Barack Obama is dead. We must fight now as barbarians for our country. If we feel so strongly about our beliefs, about our children, and about our society this will be but a small price to pay. It is the Democrats' only path forward.
