Thumbs down on the Circle S and the Walt Ranch proposals. There are still some of us who view the remaining hillsides and mountaintops in their natural state as valuable resources. They act as a buffer to the valley below.

Gone are the prunes, the walnuts, the pears, the cattle, etc., that kept Napa from being a monoculture. We are a monoculture with the accompanying hazards. There is not only the constant threat of sharpshooters and Pierce’s disease but also the drain on our natural resources -- our water and our wildlife habitat. We need to take a lesson from the Wappo Indians who inhabited our valley for many years. Walk softly and leave a small print.

Supervisors, stiffen up your spines and say “NO” to those large proposed developments like the Circle S and Walt Ranch, which drain our resources, for which there are no real mitigations. The removal of thousands of trees is nothing short of the rape of a hillside. Many species of wildlife are territorial. If you take away their territory, where are they supposed to go? Do you want a mountain lion in your backyard?

A very wise man, Justice William O. Douglas, once said, and I paraphrase, If we don’t speak for the rocks, the trees and the animals, who will? They can’t speak for themselves.

Napa already has many fine restaurants and beautiful vineyards on the valley floor. Let’s not continue to chip away at what is left of our hillsides and mountaintops with massive vineyards and winery expansions using the lame excuse that it is better than housing.

Napa has gained recognition throughout the world as a jewel in the crown of wine destinations. When is enough enough? I am not the only person in this valley asking this question. Elected powers that be, please take note. Protect our remaining watersheds from further destruction. Let the hillsides remain a Walden Pond for humans and a natural uninterrupted habitat for wildlife.
