I enjoyed my recent visit to the Napa Valley but was appalled at receiving my hotel bill to find a $53 per night local tourism marketing tax, on top of the somewhat high daily rate. The hotel itself was around $400 a night for a room similar to what we paid $100 per night in every other city on our California tour.
Now I've worked in tourism marketing and have traveled all over, but I've never seen tourism taxes this high. And for what? I should have gotten at least one free Uber ride at $50 a day! I had a great time, but to be honest, I'll probably head to another wine region on my next visit.
I'd have probably spent that money on winery purchases, but alas it seemingly goes into someone else's mystery pocket.
