Some California schools want waivers to reopen despite virus

FILE - In this July 13, 2020, file photo, a chain-link fence lock is seen on a gate at a closed Ranchito Elementary School in the San Fernando Valley section of Los Angeles. Most of California's schools aren't allowed hold classroom instruction when the academic year starts due to rising coronavirus infections, but some are hoping an exception might be made for them to open their doors. Earlier this month, Gov. Gavin Newsom said public and private K-12 schools would remain shuttered so long as the counties where they are located remain on a state monitoring list for the virus.
