Just a month into the season, the Napa Valley Cricket Club already has three games under its belts. In addition to its annual World Series of Cricket, the NVCC has hosted the San Francisco Seals in Calistoga and traveled to San Diego to play on its annual tour.
The club has seen an influx of new members over the winter months, both ex-patriates and locals, and now boasts five American members in its ranks. As a result of the growth in its membership, which is approaching 40 playing members, the club has expanded its schedule of games for 2015 to give everyone the opportunity to get game time.
“It’s great to be in the position that we’re having to get more games on the books,” said Andrew Healy, NVCC vice-president and the person who does all of the scheduling for the club. “Since our first season in 2012, we’ve usually played somewhere between 12 and 14 games each season – which runs from April through October – but this year that number will be closer to 17 as a result of the extra demand from new membership.”

The club will host its usual local rivals from Sonoma and Marin over the coming months, but also has games scheduled against teams from San Francisco and Sacramento. Teams from much further afield, including Honolulu and Merion of Philadelphia, will be playing the NVCC as part of its annual tours, too.
“Who wouldn’t want to come to our little slice of paradise and play cricket on their tour,” said NVCC president Phil Bourke. “In our short history, we’ve carved out a great reputation for our hospitality as a cricket club. It’s what we do well here in the Napa Valley, and we’re always happy to host touring teams and show them the sight of our beautiful valley, too.”
The NVCC hosts local rivals the Sonoma Gullies from Santa Rosa at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Napa County Fairgrounds in Calistoga. Games between the two teams are traditionally low scoring and have always been close affairs.
“We’re excited to renew our trans-Mayacamas rivalry against the Sonoma guys this coming weekend,” said Rob Bolch, NVCC club captain. “We always have very competitive and tight games against them that are played in a great spirit. Having not played so well on our recent tour to San Diego, I know that some of the squad are looking to made amends for that performance.”
The Napa Valley Cricket Club is a California nonprofit with the purpose of establishing and running an amateur cricket club in the Napa Valley to further the social enjoyment and development of cricket and associated events within the area. Now in its fourth season, the NVCC welcomes adult players of all skill levels.
