Prolific Prep Academy of Napa, which is off to a 5-0 start, is No. 6 in the USA TODAY High School Sports’ 2017-18 Super 25 Preseason Boys Basketball rankings.

The Super 25 “highlights the best teams around the nation,” according to USA TODAY.

Findlay Prep (Henderson, Nevada) is No. 1 in the rankings.

Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) is No. 16 and Bishop Montgomery (Torrance, Calif.) is No. 19.


The Pacific Union College men’s basketball team lost its exhibition game on Monday to host Humboldt State, 110-66, at Lumberjack Arena in Arcata.

The Pioneers were led by Jayson Marquez with 15 points on 6-of-15 shooting and four rebounds in 34 minutes, Chris Camper with 14 points on 6-of-16 shooting and five rebounds in 30 minutes, and Noel Briones with 10 points on 4-of-9 shooting in 27 minutes.

Brandon Franklin (six points), Rae Hubbard (five points, four steals), and Wayne Englestad (seven points) were other contributors for Pacific Union (1-2 overall).

Marquez scored 28 points on 9-of-19 shooting with five 3-point baskets, four rebounds and three assists in 33 minutes for Pacific Union in Wednesday’s 93-90 nonconference loss to host Fresno Pacific.

The Pioneers had four players score in double figures.

Hubbard scored 16 points 6-of-12 shooting with four 3-pointers, four rebounds and two assists.

Devon Pinnock had 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting with three rebounds and three assists.

Franklin had 11 points on 2-of-5 from the floor with two 3-pointers, two rebounds and three assists.

Briones had 10 points 3-of-6 from the floor with three rebounds, two assists and four steals.

Joseph Scott had nine points, two assists and four steals.

The Pioneers battled back from a 14-point deficit.


Eight teams are entered in the 2017 CIF U.S. Tennis Association Regional Girls Championships, which are scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Broadstone Racquet Club in Folsom.

Los Gatos, Red Bluff, Dougherty Valley-San Ramon, St. Francis-Sacramento, St. Francis-Mountain View, Del Oro-Loomis, Monte Vista-Danville and Lowell-San Francisco comprise the field.


Paul Scruggs, who played for Prolific Prep Academy of Napa, scored 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting with four rebounds in 20 minutes for Xavier on Monday in the Musketeers’ 101-75 win over Rider.

Scruggs is a 6-foot-3, 207-pound freshman guard for Xavier.


Gary Trent, Jr., a former Prolific Prep Academy player, had seven points, four rebounds and two assists in 35 minutes for Duke as the Blue Devils beat Michigan State, 88-81, in the Champions Classic on Tuesday night at the United Center in Chicago.
