Napa High senior Robert Mitchell has given his verbal commitment to swim for the NCAA Division I program at the University of Wyoming in Laramie.
Mitchell, a distance freestyle specialist who competes for the Terrapin Swim Team in Concord, will join the 2018 Western Athletic Conference champions in the fall of 2019.
“I’m thrilled to become the first commit of Wyoming Swimming’s 2019 recruiting class,” said Mitchell, who took an unofficial trip to Wyoming in August and recently returned from his official visit. “It was super exciting to get my decision done early. I loved meeting the team on my visit and felt totally comfortable with them.
“When I first thought about where I would swim in college, Wyoming wasn’t even on the list. However, as I got to know the coaches over the past year, I started to think it might be a good fit. I’ve built a great relationship with Coach Jim Bossert and really like Head Coach Dave Denniston. When I was up on my visit I got to meet Wyoming’s new coach, Harmilee Cousin III, and can see myself swimming really well for him, too.”
Mitchell toured Wyoming’s new High Altitude Performance Center, which was designed to support student-athletes training at the school’s 7,220-foot elevation with two weight rooms, a Training Table cafeteria that offers athletes healthy food, an academic center, and a state-of-the-art sports medicine and rehabilitation center.
“Wyoming’s facilities both athletically and academically that support all their athletes are incredible,” Mitchell said. “I feel especially lucky that I’ll be able to utilize these facilities when I get to Wyoming.”
A USA Swimming Scholastic All-American, Mitchell plans to study accounting at the university’s School of Business.
Mitchell plans to make his commitment to Wyoming official later this fall, when the early signing period begins.
“I can’t wait to be a Cowboy,” he said.
