The 20th annual True Wrestler Napa Valley Girls Classic, one of the oldest and largest high school girls wrestling tournaments in the country, will be held Friday and Saturday at Vintage High School.
The championship bracket in the main gym is double-elimination. There will also be a Hard Luck Bracket in the small gym for those who lose their first two matches, so each wrestler is guaranteed at least three matches.
Competition begins at 10 a.m. Friday and at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, lasting until the early evening each day.
The weight classes are 101, 106, 111, 116, 121, 126, 131, 137, 143, 150,160, 170, 189 and 235 pounds. Medals are awarded up to seventh place in each bracket, and team scores are kept.
Of last year’s 14 Napa Valley Girls Classic champions, 13 went on to place at least fifth at the state meet. Of the five who won state titles, two are seniors this year – Enochs’ Rory Coscia (121) and Del Oro’s Candice Corralejo (131). Also expected to defend Classic crowns are Corona senior Sugey Ceja (106), Oakdale sophomore Faalia Martinez (143) and McNair junior Fuatino Moala (235). Ceja and Moala were state runners-up last year and Martinez went 1-2 at state.
Wrestlers returning to the Classic for Vintage include seniors IzzaBelle Ygnalaga (137) and Martha Avila (235), who each went 1-2 last year.
