Suns pledge upgrade in talent, experience after awful season

The 2018 Dan Majerle Hustle Award was presented to Phoenix Suns rookie guard-forward Josh Jackson, who is a Justin-Siena High School graduate and a former Prolific Prep Academy player.

The award is presented at the end of each season to the Suns player who most personified the same hustle, grit and determination that Suns Ring of Honor member Dan Majerle displayed as a player, according to

Jackson was selected based on the results of five voting categories: Suns fans, Suns players, Suns coaches, Suns employees and Majerle himself, according to

Jackson played in 77 games and averaged 13.1 points on 41.7 percent shooting, 4.6 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game. He shot 26.3 percent from 3-point distance and 63.4 percent from the free-throw line.

All-NCS honors for Napa Valley players

The two Napa Valley players were each named honorable mention.

Imhoff Academic All-Conference

Ryan Imhoff, a senior from Napa who is majoring in chemistry, received Frontier Academic All-Conference honors for the Carroll College (Helena, Montana) men’s basketball team, the league office announced.

Imhoff, a Napa High graduate, was named as the Frontier Conference and the National Association of Basketball Coaches NAIA Division I Player of the Year. He was also selected as a first-team NAIA Division I All-American.

The Saints won the Frontier Conference regular season and tournament championship, and advanced to the NAIA Division I national tournament.

Brown plays in 2018 Nike Hoop Summit

Jordan Brown of Napa’s Prolific Prep Academy scored two points and had two rebounds for the USA Basketball Junior National Select Team in an 89-76 loss to the World Select Team at the 2018 Nike Hoop Summit on Friday at the Moda Center in Portland, Oregon.

Brown averaged 21.5 points, 11.7 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game for Prolific Prep during the 2017-18 season. Prolific Prep plays a national tournament and showcase schedule.

Top Prep Players in State

Onyeka Okongwu, a junior from Chino Hills, and Charisma Osborne, a junior at Windward-Los Angeles, were named as the top prep players in the state by Cal-Hi Sports.

Okongwu is the Mr. Basketball 2018 State Player of the Year.

Osborne is the Ms. Basketball 2018 State Player of the Year.

Russ Critchfield of Salinas was the 1964 Mr. Basketball State Player of the Year. Critchfield is a former Vintage High head boys basketball coach and is the head men’s basketball coach at Butte College-Oroville.
