Castello di Amorosa 2014 Merlot Napa Valley ($42)
YET AGAIN? I’m talking about Brooks Painter and his Castello di Amorosa wines. In a blind tasting of top Merlots from the Napa Valley, Brooks’ wine came in first place in its flight on my scorecard. I’m losing count as to how many times this has happened over the years, regardless of the grape variety or specific wine. There is something magic happening over there at the castle with Brooks.
Pronounced ripe, juicy cherry and raspberry fruits are beautifully integrated with oak spice and toast, and balanced by bright acidity. The flavors linger on a long, luxurious finish. Merlot is known to add richness to the palate of many a Napa blends, but this Amorosa wine is 100 percent Merlot — and 100 percent Merlot in its glory.
